A THOUGHT TO THE THYROID SURGERY

Abstract
With numerous publications in this country the thyroid surgery is now regarded as routine procedure.
There are, however, some pitfalls and controversy in managements of certain disease and correct application of surgical procedures. Grave¢¥s disease, almost solely managed by medical and isotope doctors, is discussed. Now the demerits of isotope therapy, i.e., growing rate of myxedema and prolonged duration for remission of . the illness, becoming obvious, the good old tool of surgical therapy for this disease should be put on limelight and it¢¥s scope of application should be widened.
On the other hand, surgeons must exercise utmost caution in dealing with the thyroid `lumps¢¥. Overly enthusiastic attitude :¢¥can lead to unnecessary surgical mutilation on thyroiditis and nodular hyperplasia or simple cyst.
In author¢¥s experience the thyroid cancer in this country, let other country¢¥s consensus alone, is best managed by conservative surgery as proposed by Dr. George Crile.
